Born in Sopot in 1868, a brother of the writer Ivan Vazov, Vladimir Vazov entered the Military School in Sofia in 1886 and became an artillery officer. On 1 March 1917 he took command of the 9th Pleven Infantry Division on the Macedonian front, where he organized a defense in depth in the Doiran sector. The division beat back British attacks in April and May 1917, and Vazov was promoted to major general on 20 May. It held again against British and Greek attacks on 18–19 September 1918, but Bulgaria signed an armistice on 29 September. Vazov was mayor of Sofia from 1926 to 1932. After the communist takeover of September 1944 he was banished to the Lovech region, where he died in poverty in 1945.
