Éamon de Valera
1882–1975 President of Dáil Éireann from 1919; Taoiseach, 1937–1948, 1951–1954 and 1957–1959; president of Ireland, 1959–1973
Born in New York City, de Valera was a mathematics teacher in Dublin before the Easter Rising, when he commanded the 3rd Battalion at Boland's Mill. His death sentence was commuted to penal servitude for life, and after release in the amnesty of 1917 he was elected MP for East Clare and became president of Sinn Féin. In 1919 he became head of the Dáil government and toured the United States from June for about 18 months, raising more than $5 million. He rejected the Anglo-Irish Treaty of December 1921 and backed the anti-Treaty side in the Civil War. He founded Fianna Fáil in 1926, headed the government from 1932, became Taoiseach in 1937 and was president of Ireland from 1959 to 1973. He died on 29 August 1975.
