Salonika
The Greek port (now Thessaloniki) that gave its name to the Salonika or Macedonian front, formed in autumn 1915 when the Allies tried to help Serbia against Germany, Austria-Hungary and Bulgaria. The expedition came too late to save Serbia, and the front stayed stable until the Allied offensive of September 1918 forced Bulgaria to capitulate.
