RMS Lusitania
The Cunard liner, launched in 1906 as the world's largest passenger ship until her sister Mauretania was completed. On 7 May 1915 the German submarine U-20 hit her with one torpedo off Ireland, and she sank in about 18 minutes, killing nearly 1,200 people, 128 of them Americans.
