Nikola Pašić

1845–1926 Prime Minister of Serbia, 1912–1918

Born in Zaječar, Pašić studied engineering in Zürich and led the People's Radical Party. Sentenced to death after the Timok Rebellion of 1883, he spent six years in exile. As prime minister from 1912 he led Serbia through the Balkan Wars, which almost doubled its territory. On 25 July 1914 he delivered Serbia's reply to the Austro-Hungarian ultimatum, which accepted most demands but rejected the participation of Austro-Hungarian officials in the inquiry on Serbian soil. Austria-Hungary declared war on 28 July. Pašić led the government during the retreat across Albania and in exile on Corfu, where the Corfu Declaration on a future South Slav state was agreed in 1917, and headed the Yugoslav delegation at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919. He died in Belgrade on 10 December 1926.
