Emmeline Pankhurst
1858–1928 Leader of the Women's Social and Political Union; war campaigner, 1914–1918
Born in Manchester to a politically active family, Emmeline Pankhurst married the barrister Richard Pankhurst and on 10 October 1903 founded the Women's Social and Political Union, a militant organization open only to women. When war began in August 1914 she and her eldest daughter Christabel persuaded the union to halt its militant campaign, and imprisoned members were released. She spent the war rallying support for it, touring North America in 1916 and traveling to Russia in June 1917 to urge the Russian people to continue fighting. Her pacifist daughters Sylvia and Adela rejected her stance, and the family rift never healed. In 1918 the Representation of the People Act gave limited suffrage to women over 30. She died on 14 June 1928.
