Marie of Romania
1875–1938 Queen consort of Romania, 1914–1927
Born Princess Marie of Edinburgh, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria, Marie married the Romanian crown prince Ferdinand on 10 January 1893 and became queen when he succeeded to the throne in October 1914. She urged Ferdinand to enter the war on the Entente side, and Romania declared war on Austria-Hungary in August 1916. After Bucharest fell, the court moved to Iași, where she worked in military hospitals and became known as the "Mother of the Wounded". In 1919 she went to the Paris Peace Conference to campaign for international recognition of Greater Romania, and in 1922 she and Ferdinand were crowned at Alba Iulia. She also wrote extensively, including an autobiography, and died on 18 July 1938.
