Sussex pledge
A promise made by Germany to the United States on 4 May 1916, after the French ferry Sussex was torpedoed without warning on 24 March, killing at least 50 people. Germany pledged to spare passenger ships and not to sink merchant ships without provision for the safety of those aboard, but rescinded it in January 1917.
