Alsace-Lorraine
The territory of the German Empire between 1871 and 1918, comprising most of Alsace and part of Lorraine, annexed after Germany's victory in the Franco-Prussian War. French resentment over its loss was one of the contributing factors to the First World War, and it was restored to France in 1918.
