J. F. C. Fuller

1878–1966 Staff officer, Tank Corps headquarters, 1916–1918

Born in Chichester, John Frederick Charles Fuller was commissioned into the Oxfordshire Light Infantry in 1898 and served in the Second Boer War. From December 1916 he served at the headquarters of the Machine Gun Corps' Heavy Branch, which became the Tank Corps, and he helped plan the tank attack at Cambrai on 20 November 1917. His Plan 1919, written in 1918, proposed tanks and aircraft striking German headquarters and supply centers in the rear; the war ended before it could be tried. Fuller became a prolific writer on mechanized warfare and was promoted major-general in 1930. After leaving the army he joined the British Union of Fascists.
