H. H. Asquith

1852–1928 Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, 1908–1916

Born in Morley, Yorkshire, Asquith won a scholarship to Balliol College, Oxford, and entered Parliament in 1886. He was Home Secretary under Gladstone, Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1905 and Liberal prime minister from 1908. During the July Crisis he kept his options open while his Cabinet was divided, but would not separate himself from Foreign Secretary Grey. Germany's violation of Belgium largely ended the divisions in the Cabinet, and Britain was at war on 4 August 1914. The shell shortage and the resignation of Admiral Fisher led him to form a coalition in May 1915, and in 1916 he introduced conscription. His son Raymond was killed on the Somme on 15 September 1916. Lloyd George's challenge forced Asquith to resign on 5 December. He died on 15 February 1928.
