Voluntary Aid Detachment
A unit of civilian volunteers providing nursing care for military personnel, founded in 1909 by the British Red Cross and the Order of St John at the War Office's request. VADs were not military nurses. Counts vary: about 80,000 members by 1918 by one estimate, and 126,000 who served over the whole war by another.
