Trench warfare
A form of land warfare fought from lines of occupied trenches, in which combatants are well protected from enemy fire. It reached its most extreme and deadly form in the First World War, when machine guns, rapid-fire artillery and barbed wire froze the front lines, particularly on the Western Front.
