Schneider CA1

The first French tank, designed to open passages through barbed wire for the infantry and to suppress German machine-gun nests. About 400 were built, after Colonel Estienne urged the formation of armored units in 1915. Their first action, at Berry-au-Bac on 16 April 1917, was largely a failure with heavy losses.
