Schlieffen Plan

Germany's strategy for a two-front war, based on a memorandum by Count Alfred von Schlieffen in 1905: a rapid sweep through Belgium to defeat France in about six weeks before turning on Russia. Modified by Moltke, it failed at the Marne in September 1914, and historians debate how far it was ever a firm operational plan.
