Race to the Sea
The reciprocal attempts of the Franco-British and German armies, from about mid-September to 19 October 1914, to outflank each other's northern wing through Picardy, Artois and Flanders. It ended on the North Sea coast of Belgium and produced a continuous trench line from Switzerland to the sea.
