Flanders
The Dutch-speaking northern part of Belgium, historically the County of Flanders, whose trading towns Ghent, Bruges and Ypres made it one of the richest parts of late medieval Europe. In the First World War it saw some of the greatest loss of life on the Western Front, especially in the three battles of Ypres.
