Kitchener's Army
The New Army, an initially all-volunteer part of the British Army formed from 1914 on the recommendation of Lord Kitchener, who sought 500,000 volunteers. Its first divisions saw major action at Suvla Bay in August 1915 and at Loos in September, and Britain turned to conscription when enthusiasm for volunteering waned.
