Bite-and-hold
A tactic in which infantry seize a shallow slice of the enemy position under heavy artillery cover, then dig in and use their guns to defeat the counterattacks before attempting another bite. Associated with Sir Herbert Plumer and used at Messines and in the Ypres battles of September 1917.
