The clause of the League of Nations Covenant in which members pledged to respect and preserve each other's territory and independence against external aggression. Senator Henry Cabot Lodge and others objected that it could commit the United States to war without the consent of Congress, which helped to defeat the Senate's ratification of the treaty.
