Armenian genocide
The systematic destruction of the Armenian people and identity in the Ottoman Empire during the First World War, spearheaded by the ruling Committee of Union and Progress. About one million Armenians died, chiefly in death marches to the Syrian desert; estimates range from 600,000 to 1.5 million.
