Pickelhaube

The spiked leather helmet worn by Prussian and German soldiers, officially adopted by Prussia in 1842 and widely imitated by other armies. Shortages in the war brought ersatz versions made of other materials, and from 1916 the steel Stahlhelm slowly replaced it as the German field helmet.
