Tubby Clayton

1885–1972 Army chaplain; founder of Talbot House

The Reverend Philip Thomas Byard 'Tubby' Clayton was an Anglican chaplain who, with Neville Talbot, opened Talbot House in Poperinge on 11 December 1915. Named after Neville's brother Gilbert, killed at Hooge that summer, it was a rest house open to all ranks, where a sign above the door told visitors to leave their rank outside. Thousands of soldiers passed through its library, canteen, garden and attic chapel, the Upper Room. After the war Clayton founded the Toc H movement (the army signaller's code for the letters T and H) to carry its spirit of fellowship and service into peacetime, and it spread across the Commonwealth.
