Henry Wilson
1864–1922 Director of Military Operations, 1910–1914; Chief of the Imperial General Staff, 1918–1922
Born in County Longford in 1864, Henry Wilson entered the army through the Longford militia, became commandant of the Staff College at Camberley in 1907 and Director of Military Operations in 1910. Keen to support France, he planned the deployment of an expeditionary force and in July 1911 agreed with the French chief of staff, General Dubail, a memorandum on its landing and concentration. In March 1914, in the Curragh incident, he backed officers who refused to move against Ulster opponents of Home Rule. He went to France in August 1914 as Sub Chief of Staff of the British Expeditionary Force and became Chief of the Imperial General Staff in February 1918. Elected for North Down in 1922, he was shot dead by two IRA men on 22 June.
