Flora Sandes

1876–1956 Sergeant major, Serbian Army, from 1916

Flora Sandes was born in Yorkshire in 1876 to an Irish family and worked as a secretary. Rejected as a nurse in 1914 for lack of qualifications, she left for Serbia on 12 August with a group of medical volunteers and served in an ambulance with the 2nd Infantry Regiment. In 1915 she stayed with the Serbian army during the Great Retreat through Albania and was enrolled as a soldier. In November 1916 a grenade wounded her seriously; she received the Order of the Karađorđe's Star and was promoted to sergeant major. She published An English Woman-Sergeant in the Serbian Army that year to raise funds for the Serbian army. After the war she was promoted captain, married Yuri Yudenitch in 1927 and died in Suffolk in November 1956.
