Elsie Inglis
1864–1917 Founder of the Scottish Women's Hospitals, 1914–1917
Born in Naini Tal, British India, in 1864, Elsie Inglis qualified as a doctor in 1892, helped found a hospital for women and children and was secretary of the Scottish Federation of Women's Suffrage Societies from 1906. After war broke out, when the government rejected her offer of a medical unit, she founded the Scottish Women's Hospitals, staffed by women and funded by the women's suffrage movement. She went to Serbia in 1915, was taken prisoner at Kruševac when Austro-Hungarian and German forces overran the country, and was repatriated through Switzerland in February 1916. That August she led a unit to Russia. She returned in 1917, gravely ill, and died at Newcastle that November. She was reportedly the first woman to hold the Serbian Order of the White Eagle.
