Verdun
A fortified city on the Meuse in northeastern France and the site of the longest battle of the war, fought from 21 February to 18 December 1916. The German 5th Army attacked on the right bank of the Meuse, hoping that the French would commit their reserves to recapture the heights and suffer catastrophic losses.
