Three Emperors' League
An alliance between the German, Russian and Austro-Hungarian empires, first agreed in 1873, renewed in 1881 and lapsed in 1887. Chancellor Bismarck formed it to keep Europe peaceful on the basis of the balance of power, fearing that a hostile combination of Austria-Hungary, France and Russia would crush Germany.
