Maxim gun
The first fully automatic machine gun, a recoil-operated weapon invented by Hiram Maxim in 1884. Its derivatives included the British Vickers, the Russian PM M1910 and the German MG 08, the water-cooled heavy machine gun adopted by the Imperial German Army in 1908.
