Kaiser

German for emperor, the title of the rulers of the German Empire from 1871 to 1918 and of the Austrian emperors; like tsar, it derives from the Roman title Caesar. In wartime English it meant above all Wilhelm II, who reigned from 1888, and the word took on strongly negative connotations.
