Defence of the Realm Act
The act of the British Parliament passed on 8 August 1914, four days after Britain entered the war, and added to as the war progressed. It gave the government wide powers, such as requisitioning buildings and land and creating criminal offences by regulation, and it imposed censorship of the press and of letters from the front.
