Plate 17 of 87 · Class III, Artillery

18-pounder

The standard British field gun of the First World War, the backbone of the Royal Field Artillery, first accepted into service in 1904. Its 84 mm caliber and shell weight were greater than those of the French 75 and German 77 mm guns, but its flat trajectory could not reach enemy troops sheltering out of the line of sight.
